More than two months have passed since the infamous Oscars slap and Jada Pinkett-Smith, the wife of the aggressor, Will Smith, has spoken out in public about the embarrassing moment for the first time on her Red Table Talk show.
Jada Pinkett-Smith brings Oscars slap to the ‘Red Table’
In late March 2022, social media went off in pandemonium when Will Smith, visibly offended by Chris Rock’s joke about his wife’s alopecia, walked up on stage and delivered a thunderous slap across the comedian’s face.
Smith issued a public apology to Rock, which as things stand, has not been reciprocated. Rock’s brother, instead, stood up for the comedian and challenged Smith to a boxing match.
While the offer still stands, Pinkett-Smith stepped up on a recent episode of her family therapy show to address the incident and use the moment as an opportunity to teach the world about alopecia.
“Considering what I’ve been through with my own health and what happened at the Oscars, thousands have reached out to me with their stories… Now, about Oscar night, my deepest hope is that these two intelligent, capable men have an opportunity to heal, talk this out and reconcile,” she said.
Pinkett-Smith pointed to the state of the world today as a crucial reason why “we need them both.”
“We all actually need one another more than ever. Until then, Will and I are continuing to do what we have done for the last 28 years, and that’s keep figuring out this thing called life together,” she added.
Rock, who was the victim of the globally-televised assault has yet to make a public statement on the attack. Smith, too, who’s since been banned from the Oscars for a decade, has been on a social media blackout since he posted the apology in late March 2022.
