Nakai had tongues wagging on social media when, during an interview on KayaFM‘s breakfast show, she got defensive when probed about her links to two of South African Hip-Hop’s biggest rap frenemies.
Context could be missing in the snippet you’ll watch below so we highly recommend you check out the entire interview below but, for the most part, the viral moment came when Sol Phenduka’s co-host dug into Nakai’s history with Cassper Nyovest and AKA.
While the Naked rapper was very cautious about dropping hints on the nature of her relationship with her former Family Tree boss, things got a bit spicy when she was asked if her migration from under Nyovest’s wing to AKA’s bedside had anything to do with spite.
“Of course not. There’s no spite. I could never want to spite Cassper [Nyovest]. He gave me such a big opportunity in my career. I would never do that to him. I’d never do that to get Cassper back. I still have major respect for him. I appreciate so much that he’s done in my career. It wasn’t about that,” she said.
Things got a tad bit more awkward when Nakai was asked if her decision to date AKA has, in any way, influenced her brand visibility. The 40 Bars rapper rather cheekily stressed that her relationship with Supamega came toward the end of her spell at Family Tree and had nothing to do with her ties to Nyovest.
“I think because of this specific thing of me dating Keenan [Forbes], people think, ‘oh it’s because there’s bad blood between Nadia and Cassper’, and it’s not about that. it’s just, it happened the way that it happened, you know,” she insisted.
After months of trying to keep their romance out of the public eye, AKA and Nakai finally confirmed that they were together in March 2022. Though some fans were happy that the two were together, others disapproved because they felt that the All Eyes On Me rapper had moved on a little too quickly after the death of his fiancée Anele Tembe.
Nakai also sent the rumour mill into overdrive in October 2022 when several of her tweets left fans speculating she was pregnant.
