A Tshwane traffic officer is under scrutiny after dashcam footage showed the moment he seemingly cleared the way for a brazen truck hijacking.
Was the Tshwane traffic officer involved in the truck hijacking?
On Wednesday, footage of the incident that occurred on Saturday, 20 April 2024, along a highway near Pretoria, surfaced online, showing the tactical nature of the truck hijacking.
In the footage, a Tshwane traffic officer riding a motorbike on the fast lane was seen swerving between the truck from which the dashcam was recording, and the freight vehicle targeted in the hijacking.
The officer signalled the recording truck driver to pull over, as a red vehicle, whizzed ahead and caught up with the pickup.
According to reports, the truck was hijacked and, from what we understand, the suspects involved in the incident were still at large.
It’s also unclear if the traffic officer, who may have witnessed the incident, was questioned about his conduct.
A statement from Tshwane law enforcement was not received when this article was published.

Tshwane officials have garnered a bad rep for their close links to truck hijackings in Pretoria.
In October 2023, two metro police department officers were released on bail for their role in a truck hijacking along the R21 highway a month earlier.
The officers, according to TMPD spokesperson Superintendent Isaac Mahamba, were caught escorting a hijacked truck carrying goods, “which was driven by a third person.”
“When the truck driver noticed the EMPD officers in an unmarked vehicle with the TMPD officers, the truck drove past and sped off. The EMPD officers pursued the suspect on foot, until they apprehended him in a nearby bush with the assistance of Gauteng department of community safety and SAPS helicopters,” Ekurhuleni metro police department official Lt-Col Kelebogile Thepa recalled.
Despite the gravity of the charges, the TMPD officers were never suspended and the case remains open.
