Msaki sent the MacG podcast into an uproar when she revealed that not only does she have a budding friendship with European megastar producer Diplo, but that he’s helped her pitch demos to Rihanna and Justin Bieber in the past.
Msaki talks Diplo, Rihanna and Justin Bieber in new MacG podcast
The Mntakababa hitmaker joined the ‘chillers’ leadership, Macgyver Mukwevho and Sol Phenduka, for a candid interview that premiered on the podcast network on Thursday.
Msaki touched on several topics, including her appreciation for the likes of Kabza De Small, her best friend Sun El Musician and Black Coffee.
The Mjolo For Who crooner also sent the chatroom into cackles when she and Sol Phenduka awkwardly laughed off questions about her alleged cheating scandal with 5FM jockey Similo โSmash Afrikaโ Mdutyulwa.
Perhaps, the 9 000+ live viewers were also left gob-smacked when Msaki put to bed rumours about her sexuality, or when she revealed that she was a mother to three children.
However, in all of Msaki’s jarring self-awareness, the true highlight of the interview came when she revealed how she had left Diplo’s direct messages (DMs) unread on Instagram for over a year before their friendship exploded.
In fact, before a friend of hers sent her a screenshot of Diplo’s comment on one of her Instagram posts about heading to Los Angeles (LA), Msaki had no idea that the producer of LSD, a collaborative effort he released in 2019 with Labrinth and Sia, which, she revealed, is one of her favourite albums, was pursuing her fervently in the DMs.
“I think I missed it for a year and then… I think I posted something about coming to LA and then he wrote on the actual post, and then a friend of mine screenshot that and sent it to me and said, like, ‘are you doing a song with Diplo?’, and I was, like, ‘who’s that?’…
“I realised he’s been tryin’a reach out and I messaged him back and I told him I’m coming to LA and we just hung out in Malibu,” she said.
According to Msaki, she and the Genius producer may have, at the very least, “15, 20 songs between us that we are just working through,” Msaki revealed.
For Msaki, her chance encounter and subsequent relationship with Diplo has granted her access to the world’s best-selling musicians, like Rihanna, whose NFL Super Bowl Halftime Show is due in February 2023, and Bieber.
“But. he’s also great ’cause, like, he will check stuff out and he’s like… He will pitch it to, you know, Justin Bieber, to Rihanna, and there’s been a few songs where , you know, like, I’ve heard them back, some of the demos and their voices, just really, just encouraging as well. Like, he’s real about the art,” she added.
While the Kuja Utanipata songwriter didn’t go into too much detail, she did hint that, perhaps, in the past, she may have received a response from Rihanna on a pitch that was fielded by Diplo on her behalf.
“Dude, Rihanna apparently thought my s*** was weird. She’s like, ‘I like this but this girl is weird. What was that lyric?’,” she shared.
Here are some of the reactions we found on Msaki’s MacG podcast interview.
