After years of rumour and no definite depictions of Velma Dinkley‘s sexuality in the well-known cartoon franchise, makers of the new Scooby-Doo film have finally shown the beloved character as a lesbian.
New Scooby-Doo film depicts Velma as a lesbian: Here’s what we know
As reported by eNCA, on Tuesday, 4 October 2022, Amazon Prime Video released a clip of Dinkley‘s first encounter with her crush, villain Coco Diablo, in the new Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!
Velma crushes on another female character, a costume designer named Coco Diablo. In the clip, her glasses fog up, and her cheeks redden as she fawns over Coco. She then says her favourite tagline, “Jinkies!” Actress Kate Micucci voices Dinkley.
LGBTQ+ Scooby-Doo fans have long favoured Dinkley because of her queer sensibilities.
She has not openly flirted or shown such intense attraction to other female characters in the show’s decades-long history. However, some producers of some editions of the show have previously revealed her character is not straight.
Even James Gunn, who wrote the early live-action films, and Tony Cervone, who served as supervising producer on the Mystery Incorporated series, have confirmed the character’s sexuality. Still, they were never able to make it official onscreen.
To mark the occasion, even Google has celebrated the news. Google created an LGBTQ-themed animation that plays anytime the terms “Velma,” “Velma Scooby-Doo,” “Velma Dinkley,” or “Dinkley” are typed in the search box.
The prompts make the Google search results page explode with confetti and LGBTQ+ flags.
The Halloween special, Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo, will debut on Cartoon Network on Friday, 14 October 2022, DSTv channel 301.
