Nandipha Magudumana released an open letter from behind bars, addressed to her supporters and containing bold claims of abuse and injustice.
Nandipha Magudumana open letter: Here’s everything you must know
Magudumana, who’s currently remanded at Bizzah Makhete Correctional Centre in Kroonstad, Free State, as a consequence of her decision to reserve her right to bail, lashed out at the supposed horrid conditions she and her inmates are enduring in custody.

“As women’s month comes to an end I’m reminded about the struggles women face in our country. In the near future, I will soon be in a position to give you deeper insight on… my painful experience at the correctional facility including the plight of woman inmates and the violation of their human rights,” she wrote.
MAGUDUMANA CLAIMS SHE WAS SEXUALLY ABUSED BY POWERFUL MEN IN GOVERNMENT
More shocking, however, were bold allegations Magudumana made about how she “suffered physical, emotional, financial and sexual abuse at the hands of powerful men, including some of the most powerful and prominent families in South Africa currently occupying the highest offices in government and business.”
While the deregistered doctor was careful to not mention names, her strong claims did play into fluttering narratives about her alleged links to powerful figures, who may have played a crucial role in not only aiding Thabo Bester, a convicted murderer and rapist, in his daring prison break, but also possibly assisted the star-crossed lovers with the necessary means to bypass border control systems and illegally enter Tanzania, where they were arrested in April 2023.

MAGUDUMANA INSISTS SHE WAS UNLAWFULLY ARRESTED IN TANZANIA
Moreover, despite a high court judge rubbishing her challenge to declare her arrest unlawful, Magudumana doubled down on the assertion that she was illegally detained.
“The merits concerning the allegations against me and the events which transpired in Tanzania are currently before the courts and will also be addressed at a more appropriate time,” Magudumana wrote.
The theatrical nature of the open letter coincidentally resembled Bester’s recent in-court antics. For some reason, Magudumana, once a successful cosmetic surgeon, watermarked her open letter with a striking and, rather dramatic, logo using her initial.

This may suggest that beyond the confines of incarceration, the disgraced doctor may be plotting ways to monetise her notoriety. For one, Magudumana cleared speculation around a recent prison visit from veteran actress and producer Sonia Mbele and confirmed she was in the process of greenlighting a docuseries on her life.
“I am also aware of the various productions being shot about my life, and I’d like to categorically state that if my voice or that of my legal team is not represented, there is likely no truth or credibility to that story.

“I have conditionally granted a black woman owned production company from South Africa exclusive rights to my story and our lawyers are finalising the paperwork,” Magudumana wrote.
Toward the end of her open letter, Magudumana directed this message to her children, who, coincidentally, are in the custody of her estranged husband Mkhuseli Oscar Magudumana, whom she allegedly left for the life-on-the-edge adventures of Thabo Bester.
“Lastly and most importantly, to my beautiful children, I miss you so much and mommy loves you. Mommy is fighting with everything she has to be with you again. I will see you soon,” she wrote.
Magudumana, Bester and 10 other accused are expected back in court on 11 October 2023.
