The incident, which unfolded on Saturday, 13 January 2024, near Winchester Road, reportedly occurred just outside Perignons Restaurant and Event Centre, a spot that turned from a place of mourning to a scene of a crime.
Mims was outside the venue, where a funeral was being held when the shooting happened.
According to reports, the situation quickly escalated with over 300 shots heard at the scene.
Big Jook was struck by gunfire, leading to fatal injuries.
He was rushed to St. Francis Hospital but succumbed to his wounds. Another individual, wounded in the same shootout, is in critical condition.
The Memphis Police Department responded to the chaotic scene, and their investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
Social media has been rife with speculation, some posts suggesting that Mims’s death could be a retaliatory act for the murder of Memphis rap icon Young Dolph in 2021.
However, these suggestions remain unconfirmed, and the police have not released any official statements linking the two incidents.
The loss of Big Jook is a significant blow to Yo Gotti and his family.
Known for his association with Yo Gotti’s label, Collective Music Group, Big Jook was more than just the rapper’s brother.
He was an integral part of the music business, promoting artists under the Collective Music Group banner and featuring in music videos.
At this time, Yo Gotti has yet to surface with a public statement on his brother’s violent death.
