Chong Cheng, a 36-year-old Chinese national, has been charged in the Adelaide mass shooting that resulted in one fatality and several critical injuries.
Suspect in Adelaide mass shooting charged with murder
Chong Cheng was apprehended by KwaZulu-Natal police at OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday, 1 May 2024, as he allegedly attempted to leave South Africa.
Initially detained in Gauteng, Cheng has since been transferred to the Durban Regional Court where he faces serious charges.
According to Durban SAPS, Cheng is charged with one count of murder and four counts of attempted murder.
These charges stem from a violent incident on Adelaide Tambo Road, where Cheng allegedly opened fire on a group of individuals, leading to multiple casualties.

The Adelaide mass shooting incident took place on Sunday, 5 May 2024.
The victims, four foreign women and one male, all of Asian descent, were about to depart for a nearby shopping centre that fateful morning when the assailant, emerging from the same house, began shooting.
The attack left one woman dead at the scene and three others critically wounded.
The male friend, however, managed to escape unharmed.
The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation.

Cheng made his initial court appearance shortly after his arrest, on 6 May 2024, in the Durban Regional Court.
The court proceedings are set to continue on Wednesday, 15 May 2024.
