It’s been a rough week for DaBaby on social media, following his controversial Rolling Loud performance, but his most recent post on Instagram suggests that his attitude towards the backlash is ‘giving what it’s supposed to give’.
Top musicians condemn DaBaby’s ‘gay’ comments
The Rolling Loud Festival was the leading trending topic for the most part of this past week. Video clips of the drug-induced frenzy were everywhere on social media and the world’s A-list celebrities resurfaced to an atmosphere that was once rudely stricken away by COVID-19.
A lot of talking points rose out of the music festival. For one, Kanye West made headlines when he pulled out of his scheduled performance at the event held in Miami, Florida, to camp out at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia and finish up his much-anticipated 10th studio album.
Young Thugg also created a buzz with his pink hairdo but the moment of the festival came in the midst of DaBaby’s performance.
At some point during an intermission, the North Carolina star encouraged fans to put their cellphone lights up, excluding those who are HIV-positive and homosexual men who have sex in car parks.
Perhaps, most disturbing was the misguided claim that people infected with the sexually transmitted virus will “die in two or three weeks.”
Rapper forced to apologise after sponsors pull out
Following the spread of the video clip, social media was rocked by anti-DaBaby rhetoric, particularly from the LGBTQIA+ community.
The insensitive comments, said in jest or not, added further fuel to a fire that’s trailed the Charlotte rapper for a while since his last public spat with Megan Thee Stallion.
You will remember that DaBaby was vocal about his avid support for Tory Lanez, a Canadian rapper currently embroiled in an assault case where it’s alleged he shot the Houston rapstress on her foot.
This time around, though, DaBaby’s insensitive and misguided statements may have been a reach too far and consequently, his business dealings have suffered.
Clothing retailer Boohoo is the first corporate sponsor to publicly reveal that it’s cut all ties with the Charlotte star. DaBaby had secured a lucrative brand outlet for his merchandise but the entire agreement was scuppered by this homophobic statements.
“BoohooMAN condemn the use of homophobic language and confirm we will no longer be working with DaBaby. Diversity and inclusion are part of the boohoo Groups DNA and we pride ourselves on representing the diverse customers we serve across the globe.
“We stand by and support the LGBTQ+ community, and do not tolerate any hate speech or discrimination in any form,” the retail merchant noted.
DaBaby meets apology with new music video
It seems the loss of business and bridges in the entertainment network has not phased DaBaby. In his apology that followed after Boohoo’s statement, the rapper admitted that people who were triggered by his HIV/AIDS comments have every right to be upset.
“What I said was insensitive even though I have no intentions on offending anybody. So my apologies,” he tweeted.
However, this apology took a quick turn in his reference to the LGBTQIA+ community:
“But the LGBT community… I ain’t trippin on y’all, do you. y’all business is y’all business,” he shrugged
In the midst of the furore, DaBaby released a brand new music video titled Giving What Its Supposed To Give. In his announcement post of the video, the rapper went into a long-winded rant about the current state of affairs in his career, claiming that people refuse to understand his logic.
The video has been out for less than 24 hours and at the time this article was published, it was edging towards one million views.
