TikTok influencer Karabo Khukhu, known as Jelly Babie, has faced severe online backlash after a video surfaced showing her demeaning a cashier at a grocery store.
Netizens cancel ‘Jelly Babie’ for degrading cashier
In the footage, Jelly Babie can be heard using derogatory language towards a female cashier while recording the interaction to post on social media.
Initially, this video was intended to boost her popularity; however, it led to the opposite effect. Following the public outcry, Jelly Babie’s TikTok followers plummeted by 500,000 within 48 hours.
The fallout from the video had immediate consequences for the cashier involved. Employed by Big Save, a supermarket chain, the cashier was initially fired for purportedly disrespecting a customer.
This decision was later reversed after further investigation by the company management.
In a statement, Big Save highlighted their commitment to protecting their employees’ rights and dignity, affirming that the cashier was filmed without her consent and that they would support her in responding to this privacy breach.
“Our priority remains the safety and dignity of our employees and we will take the necessary measures to ensure a supportive and respectful work environment. We call for accountability from the TikTok Influencer involved and urge for appropriate action to be taken, in apologising publicly to both our employee and the company,” the retailer noted.
