Hollywood’s brightest stars shone at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards, where Oppenheimer and Barbie emerged as big winners.
‘Barbenheimer’ dominance continues at Critics Choice Awards
The event, hosted by Chelsea Handler for the second year, took place at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica due to a strike at the original venue, the Fairmont Centre Plaza.
Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s latest cinematic offering, snagged the Best Picture award. Paul Giamatti claimed Best Actor for his role in The Holdovers, while Emma Stone’s performance in Poor Things earned her the Best Actress title.
Supporting roles were no less competitive, with Robert Downey Jr and Da’Vine Joy Randolph winning for Oppenheimer and The Holdovers, respectively.
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie also had a memorable night. The film not only won Best Comedy but also scored in the Best Original Screenplay category. Gerwig, alongside co-writer Noah Baumbach, accepted the award.
Barbie further dazzled in technical categories, winning Best Costume Design, Best Hair and Makeup, and Best Production Design.
In a touching moment, Harrison Ford, at 81, received the Critics Choice Career Achievement Award.
He expressed heartfelt thanks to his wife, Calista Flockhart, and collaborators, following a montage of his film clips presented by Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold.
TV categories saw Succession win Best Drama Series, with Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook securing Best Actor and Actress in a Drama Series for their roles in the show.
The Bear roared in the comedy section, winning Best Comedy Series, and its stars, Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri, won Best Actor and Actress in a Comedy Series.
Oppenheimer continued its winning streak in the Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, and Best Score categories.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swung away with the Best Animated Feature award, while Anatomy of a Fall took home the Best Foreign Language Film.
