The inferno, which has been scorching the area since Monday, has escalated to such an extent that the Overstrand Municipality has declared a full evacuation for the safety of the community.
Pringle Bay, a picturesque coastal town in the Western Cape, now lies shrouded in thick smoke, with the blaze threatening to descend from the mountain to the residential areas.
The fire’s intensity has already resulted in the destruction of homes and cottages at a local hotel, leaving several people homeless.
The firefighting efforts, comprising 120 firefighters, 40 vehicles, and three helicopters, have been battling against high temperatures, strong winds, and unpredictable fire behaviour.
Despite these challenges, the firefighters’ valiant efforts have so far prevented further damage to residential properties.
Overstrand municipal manager Dean O’Neill reported no loss of life, although 783 hectares of land have been consumed by the flames.
The municipality has set up Kleinmond Town Hall as an emergency evacuation centre, welcoming residents and their pets.
The community is also rallying to support the firefighters and emergency personnel, with donations being collected at the Hermanus Fire and Rescue and Disaster Management offices.
As Pringle Bay grapples with this disaster, the town’s resilience and community spirit stand as a testament to its character.
The situation remains fluid, with authorities closely monitoring the fire and providing updates to ensure the safety of all residents.
