The Department of Corrections issued a statement on Tuesday, confirming the stabbing of Janusz Walus.
Janusz Walus stabbing: Here are the latest updates
In a statement, the department revealed that the Polish national due for parole in the murder of struggle veteran Chris Hani was targeted in an attack by an inmate of the same housing unit.
Details are scarce at this time, the department noted, “but what can be stated at this point is that inmate Walus is stable and DCS healthcare officials are providing the necessary care.”
“Stabbing and other forms of disturbances are offences not warranted in a correctional environment and this case will be investigated,” the statement concluded.
The suspects involved in the Janusz Walus stabbing were unknown at the time this article was published.
South African politics were rocked last week when the Constitutional Court overturned Justice Minister Ronald Lamola’s decision to dismiss Walus’ parole bid in 2020.
In his ruling, Chief Justice Raymond Zondo criticised Lamola’s decision as “irrational”.
While Zondo recognised the gravity of Walus’ crime, the ConCourt chief justice insisted that the Polish convict and his accomplice Clive Derby-Lewis had rightfully served the minimum required time in prison and, therefore, were eligible for parole.
Walus’ impending parole has been the subject of intense furore as the 10-day deadline for his release looms. Hani’s widow Limpho lambasted Zondo’s ruling as “totally diabolical.”
“This country is finished where in this country a foreign white can come into South Africa, kill my husband,” she said.
Walus’ release date has yet to be confirmed, with questions lingering on his status as a prominent South African resident.
