The incident, which took place in the early hours of Monday, 18 December 2023, has sent shockwaves through the Kaloum area, a bustling hub of administrative and business activities.
As the fire raged on, reports emerged of numerous injuries, with victims rushed to two of Conakry’s main hospitals, Ignace Deen and Donka.
The explosion, which occurred shortly after midnight, was particularly intense near the port, an area critical to the city’s commerce and transportation.
The impact of the blast sent thick black smoke spiralling into the sky, a harrowing sight for residents who witnessed the unfolding disaster.
Amid the chaos, the local community was rocked by fear and uncertainty.
“Kaloum is burning. The port area is completely barricaded by the police, and firefighters are rushing towards the site of the disaster,” recounted Thierno Diallo, a local resident, over the phone.
Emergency officials were quick to respond, focusing on containing the blaze and assisting those affected.
