Former Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Lindiwe Mazibuko made several interesting remarks about Cyril Ramaphosa’s resignation, following Thursday’s explosive events.
Lindiwe Mazibuko said this about Cyril Ramaphosa resignation
As the country waits with bated breath on Ramaphosa’s first public address since the bombshell revelations contained in the Section 89 independent panel’s report, political leaders have weighed in on the president’s next move.
The EFF and DA, while at odds over a way forward, sang from the same hymn book on Ramaphosa’s fate. As calls for the president’s resignation grew louder, Mazibuko warned of the potentially dire consequences should Ramaphosa vacate his office.
News24 set South Africa’s political sphere ablaze when reports surfaced of insiders claiming that, at any moment on Thursday, Ramaphosa would announce his resignation as both leader of South Africa and the ANC.
It seemed all but inevitable that the president would appear for his last ‘family meeting’ as Head of State. However, in the 11th hour, it was reported that figures close to the presidency managed to convince Ramaphosa to delay the announcement.
This was further corroborated by Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula who, in a series of tweets, shot down rumours “making rounds that the President convened cabinet and imformed us about his resignation. (sic)”
“This are unfounded rumors as the was no such a meeting of cabinet (sic),” the minister wrote.
Mazibuko gave her perspective on the eventuality of Ramaphosa’s resignation, warning that the president’s decision would “open the door for the nastiest, most craven and unrepentant criminals in the ANC to start feasting again.”
“Are you ready for ‘President David Mabuza’?” the former politican wrote.
Mazibuko likened the ANC’s monopoly over rotten leadership to the UK’s Tories, who “simply hold onto power and shuffle the leadership deck.”
The former DA member also criticised her political party’s attempt to have an early election, claiming Steenhuisen’s only interest was “looking for an ‘angle’ into the story.”
“A Ramaphosa resignation is just what the crooks ordered. The next 18 months will be hell for our country. But in 2024 we get to decide if it’s time to end South Africa’s abusive relationship with the ANC. The decision is still ours to make,” she added.
It remains unclear what the president’s next move is. According to Mbalula, the ANC’s national executive committee will convene for a special symposium “where we will discuss this issues and get reports etc (sic).”
Here’s what Mbalula had to say about reports that ANC insiders are plotting to isolate Ramaphosa:
