US-born billionaire and philanthropist Bill Gates is currently in isolation after contracting a COVID-19 infection.
Bill Gates reacts to testing positive for COVID-19
The 66-year-old took to social media, on Tuesday, to reveal that more than two years into the pandemic, he has finally contracted the novel coronavirus.
“I’ve tested positive for COVID. I’m experiencing mild symptoms and am following the experts’ advice by isolating until I’m healthy again,” he wrote.
At his senior age, alarm bells would have rung off about his health and safety. However, much like in Queen Elizabeth’s case, Gates is fully vaccinated, and boosted, against COVID-19.
“I’m fortunate to be vaccinated and boosted and have access to testing and great medical care,” he added.
Gates’ announcement comes on the heels of his CNN interview, which aired on Sunday. In the interview, the 66-year-old was probed on the global economic outlook, considering the ongoing Ukraine war and how poor countries may be impacted by the increased inflation experienced by rich nations.
“It comes on top of the pandemic where government debt levels were already very, very high, and there were already supply chain problems. It’s likely to accelerate the inflationary problems that rich world economies have and force an increase in interest rates that eventually will result in an economic slowdown,” he said.
For Gates, the wealth gap between rich and poor countries is where, in part, the world lost in the fight against COVID-19. In a blog post he published in April 2022, the Microsoft founder urged world leaders to be “serious about preventing the next pandemic.”
“We need to not just go back to pre-Covid aid levels but increase investments in strengthening health systems (which will also help shrink the overall health gap between the rich and the poor),” he wrote.
Work continues for the 66-year-old, who, at the time this article was published, was still in isolation.
We will continue working with partners and do all we can to ensure none of us have to deal with a pandemic again.
