In an effort to promote transparency and fairness in the rapidly evolving landscape of music streaming, Deezer, the global music platform, has announced the development of groundbreaking tools.
Deezer aims to root out AI music with new tool
With the rise of AI-generated music, Deezer aims to support artists in monetising their creations, combat fraud, and enhance the overall user experience for music enthusiasts.
As the streaming services witnesses a staggering influx of over 100 000 new tracks uploaded daily, Jeronimo Folgueira, CEO of Deezer stated that the platform recognises the need to prioritise quality over quantity and safeguard genuine artists who produce truly valuable content.
He emphasised the platform’s responsibility as a leading streaming service to establish a fair and transparent environment for music consumption.
Deezer’s objective, Folgueira explained, is to combat illicit and fraudulent content, foster transparency, and devise a new remuneration system that rewards professional artists for their valuable contributions.
In line with this vision, Deezer is now actively working on tools to identify AI-generated content.
Deezer’s forthcoming system will employ cutting-edge technology to detect and tag music created by generative AI.
The initial focus will be on songs utilising the synthetic voices of existing artists.
These tags will serve to inform artists, labels, and users about the authenticity of the content, reduce fraudulent activities, and pave the way for a remuneration model that distinguishes between different forms of music creation.
This development comes on the heels of Universal Music’s decisive action against an unauthorised AI-generated song mimicking the voices of Drake and The Weeknd, in April 2023.
Jeronimo underscores the potential of AI to generate incredible content but emphasises the importance of responsible implementation.
He highlights the present opportunity to establish responsible practices from the outset of the AI revolution, learning from the mistakes made by social media giants when combating the spread of fake news on their platforms.
Deezer aims to uphold its commitment to artists and fans alike.
Deezer’s toolset will leverage extensive research in Audio AI and content identification, building upon their proprietary Radar technology.
Radar has the capability to scan vast music catalogues, accurately identifying songs even when the audio signal is distorted or the tempo is altered.
Currently used to detect fraudulent content, Radar serves as the foundation for Deezer’s ongoing efforts. Moreover, it represents one of the many unique solutions offered by Deezer to external parties as part of its Tech Services proposition.
Deezer’s pursuit of creating a transparent and fair music streaming landscape by detecting and distinguishing AI-generated music marks an important step in shaping the future of the industry.
