Renowned producer Young Guru has once again voiced his opposition to music created by artificial intelligence software, responding to recent reports about Timbaland’s interest in “legitimising AI music featuring late legends.”
Young Guru goes after Timbaland for commercializing AI music
Taking to Instagram Story, Guru directed his message to Timbaland, expressing his concerns and referring to the concept as both dangerous and, at its core, unoriginal.
He further aligned himself with the Luddites, a 19th-century radical organisation that sought to dismantle textile machinery in England.
Timbaland, in an interview with Forbes, revealed his plans to commercialise AI software that will revolutionise the creation of music and generate revenue with reduced costs.
Expressing confidence in his vision, Timbaland stated,
“I’m already here. This is what I’m doing. I’m going to lead the way.”
This comes on the heels of Timbaland’s recent AI collaboration with the late Notorious B.I.G., where the rapper’s verses were incorporated into Timbaland’s beats—an opportunity that never materialised when Biggie was alive.
In an Instagram post, Timbaland acknowledged the controversy surrounding AI-generated music and hinted at a solution being developed.
Emphasising the potential benefits for all parties involved, he shared his excitement about finally realising his long-standing desire to collaborate with Biggie, describing it as a significant achievement.
The clash of opinions between Young Guru and Timbaland underscores a fundamental divide in the music industry. While Timbaland sees AI as an innovative tool with the potential to revolutionise song creation and profitability, Guru raises concerns about the authenticity and artistic integrity of music generated by machines.
As the debate surrounding AI-generated music continues, artists and producers grapple with the implications of this technological advancement, weighing the possibilities against concerns about preserving the human touch and emotional depth that has defined the art form for centuries.
