Where snowfall is expected in South Africa on Monday, 10 July 2023
The Western Cape has already experienced cold, wet, and windy weather, and it is set to spread eastwards in the coming days, affecting different regions of South Africa.
Consequently, cold to very cold temperatures are anticipated across most parts of the country, accompanied by snowfall in high-lying areas.
The long-awaited cold front made landfall in the western parts of South Africa this past weekend, leading to a noticeable drop in daytime temperatures and an increase in showers and rain.
The cooling trend is predicted to continue over the western regions, extending to the central and eastern parts throughout Monday, with maximum temperatures expected to remain below 10°C in many interior areas, contributing to the chilly conditions.
The snowfall, which began in the high-lying areas of the Western and Northern Cape, is projected to progress to the high-lying areas of the Eastern Cape.
In some places, the snowfall may become disruptive, particularly in the Eastern Cape, the South African Weather Services (SAWS) warned.
Additionally, the southern Drakensberg region is likely to experience snowfall, while light snow is possible along the eastern Highveld and escarpment of Mpumalanga on Monday.
It is important to note that the combination of extremely cold temperatures and potential snowfall poses a real risk to small-stock farmers and outdoor activities.
Alongside the wintry conditions, strong winds are expected over the western and central interior regions, with potentially damaging waves along the west, south, and southeast coasts. Windy conditions will also persist over the eastern interior of the country throughout Monday.
