Thuso Mbedu got a taste of Hollywood mainstream media when she appeared next multi-award-winning actress and mentor Viola Davis on the latest airing of The View.
Thuso Mbedu talks ‘The Woman King’ on ‘The View’
The South African actress is the latest export to set foot into the cutthroat US film industry, but, it seems, for the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) native, moving with grace under the tutelage of Davis has made life in Hollywood a breeze.
Mbedu appeared alongside fellow cast mates Lashana Lynch and Sheila Atim on The View‘s roundtable to talk about The Woman King, an epic action that reimagines the story of Agojie, an all-female unit of warriors “who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness, unlike anything the world has ever seen.”
A well-poised Mbedu faced several questions from the show’s hosts, Whoopi Goldberg and others, and suffice it to say, the 31-year-old left a positive impression.
Here are a few quotes from her interview:
On filming her first big-screen movie in South Africa
“It was absolutely amazing! I obviously didn’t know when I auditioned that they would shoot it in Africa, let alone South Africa, and it made sense for it to be done that way, and not only was it shot in my home country, the first two weeks of production was shot in my home province! It was extra special! The locations were gorgeous, we’ve got beautiful locations in South Africa.”
On working with Viola Davis
“It’s great working with Viola [Davis] I first met her during the audition process. We had a creative conversation about the script, and if anything, it reassured me that I was in safe hands. There wasn’t a space where I had to prove myself to her. It was just a conversation, give and take, and it really set the tone of how we would work together.”
The Woman King is set to premiere in South African theatres on Friday, 30 September 2022, two weeks after the rest of the world sees it.
