Thuso Mbedu is set for her ‘big-screen’ debut on The Woman King, which premieres in theatres in September 2022.
‘The Woman King’: Here’s the synopsis
Carrying on the path of critical acclaim, Mbedu and veteran actress Viola Davis reunite in this thrilling African historical fantasy, which follows the story of Agojie, an all-female unit of warriors “who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness, unlike anything the world has ever seen.”
The Woman King draws on true events from the past and is centred around the life of General Nanisca, played by Davis.
The hardships she’s endured rising through the ranks of a patriarchal African dynasty mould her into a fierce leader whose purpose is to train the next generation of female recruits “and readies them for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life.”
