Veteran actress Sonia Mbele surfaced on Wednesday with a statement addressing the outrage of his son, Donell’s abuse scandal.
Was Sonia Mbele a victim of abuse? – Here’s what she said
The actress renowned for her ‘Ntombi’ role on Generations was forced to revisit her past traumas after her son’s now ex-girlfriend Reokeditswe Makete took to Instagram to blast the teenager as an alleged abuser.
In a series of viral posts, Makete unveiled her bruised face and torn-off nail, injuries she claims were inflicted by Donell Sedibe after she had confronted him about his alleged infidelity.
For Makete, the latest violent encounter from Donell was the last straw after allegedly enduring at least four occasions of abuse.
“This man abused me on [four] different occasions each time worse than the last. And on the most recent time i wanted to [press] charges but was conflicted by so many things. Firstly my love for him and all I thought about was his future and how selfish I’d be to ruin it, secondly his mom is a public figure so I didn’t want to drag her name into it,” she wrote.
According to Makete, not only was she allegedly struck in the face by Donell, but she was suffocated and dragged around his house.
“I realised this man isn’t going to change and the man I fell in love with just doesn’t exist anymore,” she added.
Makete’s exposé sparked outrage with commenters criticising Donell’s mother for his alleged actions. In response, Sonia Mbele release a statement where she revisited her past trauma in search of answers to her son’s reported streal of violence.
“I woke up this morning to a different world, a world I thought i had long buried. From the age of 17 to 26 I was with a man who was abusive, physically, psychologically and emotionally. I’m mentioning this so that you understand that as a woman who has suffered ALL kinds of abuse, i do not stand for, support or condone such stance,” she wrote.
Mbele applauded Makete for speaking out, albeit, she admitted, finding out about her son’s alleged abuse on social media was regretful.
“I now realise I should have taken preventative measures much earlier such as counselling and/or child therapy, but sometimes the mistake we make as African single mothers is to assume and hope that things will work out for the best meanwhile certain past behaviours can affect generations to come,” Mbele wrote.
The actress assured her fans that Donell will “face his demons and take accountability for his actions and let the law take its course.”
Makete, in one of her Instagram posts, confirmed she has since filed criminal charges against Donell. The accused teen has yet to surface with a statement in response to the abuse allegations.
“I refuse to raise a man like his father. Rehab, therapy and internal healing shall prevail,” Mbele wrote.
