The R21 highway, a crucial route for many commuters, will be closed this weekend to allow for essential repairs to damaged power cables.
R21 highway weekend road closure: Here are alternative routes you can take
This weekend, both directions of the R21 will be inaccessible to traffic due to necessary power line repairs.
The closure will affect the stretch between the Olifantsfontein Road and Nellmapius Road exits.
On Saturday, 20 April 2024, the road will be closed from 06:00 to 18:00, and on Sunday, 21 April 2024, from 06:00 until noon.
The decision to close this section of the R21 was made after power lines situated between Nellmapius Drive and Olifantsfontein Road were found to be unstable.
With the main R21 route closed, motorists are directed to use designated detours that bypass the closed section.
The M57 and M18 highways serve as the primary alternative routes:
- The M57 is accessible for northbound travellers from the Olifantsfontein interchange. This route will redirect drivers north of the closure and reconnect them with the R21 past the affected area.
- The M18 can be accessed by southbound motorists at the Nellmapius interchange. This route will help drivers navigate south and east around the closure, eventually rejoining the R21 beyond the area undergoing emergency repairs.
Drivers planning to travel through the area are advised to allow for additional travel time and to pay close attention to road signage and updates from SANRAL.
