Power lines have collapsed on the R21 between Nellmapius Drive and Olifantsfontein Road, prompting an immediate road closure.
Nellmapius Drive and Olifantsfontein Road closure on Friday, 12 April 2024
In a statement, the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) announced that due to the safety risks presented by unstable overhead power lines, a complete closure of the affected section of the R21 is necessary.
The closure, impacting all lanes in both directions, took effect immediately upon discovery of the risk.
SANRAL confirmed emergency response units are working swiftly to address the issue and will notify the public when the roads are safe to reopen.
Motorists planning to travel through this area are advised to seek alternative routes until further notice.
Alternative routes motorists can use
With the main thoroughfare closed, travellers are directed to use detour routes to circumvent the closed section of the R21.
The recommended alternatives are the M57 and the M18.
The M57 serves as a northern detour, connecting drivers to areas north of the closure, while the M18 provides access to the south and east, facilitating travel around the impacted zone.
For motorists travelling northward from the Olifantsfontein interchange, the M57 is accessible and will reroute to connect back to the R21 past the affected area.
Southbound travellers can utilise the M18 at the Nellmapius interchange, which will guide them around the closure and back onto the R21 beyond the emergency repair site.
Travellers are encouraged to allow extra travel time and to remain alert to the signage and any updates from SANRAL regarding the reopening of the R21.
