The embattled financial service provider experienced an untimely outage on Tuesday morning, and while no statement has surfaced on the cause, users reported issues with accessing the mobile app, online banking as well as performing transfers.
According to tracking data collected by Down Detector, early reports of the Capitec Bank app outage surfaced as early as 08:00 on Tuesday.
When this article was published, the only word coming from Capitec was through its social media team, which exacerbated the furore with its generic response to queries, which read:
“Hi there, we apologize for the inconvenience. We are aware of the problem. Our IT team is working on fixing the issues as soon as possible.”
Capitec’s latest system breakdown comes five months after the bank seemingly vanished with user balances. At the time, users whose salaries were paid to their accounts on Tuesday, 25 April 2023, could not access their funds due to the zero balance error.
This is the third Capitec outage in 2023.
On 24 March 2023, the bank’s users were left in the dark as access to the banking app was bizarrely revoked.
At the time, 84% of users reported problems with mobile banking, while another 15% could not access Capitec’s online features.
In August 2022, disgruntled clients took to social media to vent their frustrations after the bank incorrectly sent ‘insufficient funds’ messages whenever users performed transactions at ATMs via online banking.
Capitec acknowledged the fault and vowed to restore services. It took the bank two days to fix the technical issue.
