Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie has questioned the police’s bizarre silence on the reported breakthrough in the AKA murder investigation.
UPDATE: On Wednesday, 29 March 2023, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police released a statement addressing recent developments in AKA’s murder investigation.
Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda warned, “the media and everyone else to refrain from making reports that have the potential of jeopardising ongoing investigations.”
“Such reports also have a potential of putting at risk the lives of the people purported to have been arrested as well as endangering the lives of individuals who are portrayed as police officers in photographs and videos which have been doing the rounds on certain websites and social media platforms.
“Police are appealing for space and time to investigate the matter without undue pressure and unwarranted scrutiny from armchair investigators, analysists and faceless so-called sources who are claiming to be closer to the investigations. Police are duty-bound to keep the victims’ families abreast about any developments in the investigations. These irresponsible reporting rub salt into the fresh wounds of the family members who have put their faith on law enforcement to bring perpetrators to book and for justice to prevail.
“Investigations into the murders are ongoing and police will keep the public updated as and when there is any breakthrough or development worth communicating about,” the statement read.

Gayton McKenzie on AKA murder: ‘I smell another Senzo saga’
Earlier this week, an explosive Netwerk24 report revealed details of an elaborate police operation that supposedly culminated in the arrest of five suspects linked to the deaths of Kiernan Forbes and his longtime friend and ex-manager Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane.
The epic takedown operation took place at a popular shopping mall in Cape Town’s northern suburbs and while the suspects’ identities were, for the most part, withheld, onlookers managed to capture footage of the five men believed to be at the centre of the double murder case.

According to McKenzie, however, several details about the arrest remain unclear. For one, neither the Cape Town police nor KZN detectives working on the double homicide investigation have come forward with a statement confirming the arrests.
Moreover, the physical description of the two suspects caught on CCTV killing AKA and Tibz outside Wish restaurant that fateful Friday evening, on 10 February 2023, does not match any of the five persons of interest arrested in Belhar earlier this week.
McKenzie has since questioned the police’s silence and suggested that, perhaps, we may be in for “another Senzo saga.”
“I don’t know what happened. We can just speculate and wait for the investigations. What I do know is that this story can get uglier. I’m asking the cops to meticulously investigate and to please avoid a Senzo repeat,” he said.
The last concrete update on the AKA murder case came from Police Minister Bheki Cele, who, on Tuesday, 7 March 2023, confirmed that investigators are progressively compiling a holistic timeline of events that led up to AKA’s death using data from cellphones that were collected from the rapper’s known associates and other persons of interest.
“We have collected a lot of cellphones that we are working on, download everything and try to patch things together; that’s the last I received on this matter,” he said at the time.
The Mass Country rapper’s family has also weighed in on mounting speculation around their son’s murder case.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Forbes family thanked fans for the growing support but warned that “irresponsible actions, accusations and assumptions may cause more harm than good.”
“At this time, we call on the Megacy to mourn responsibly and ask for patience so that the law enforcers have the space to do their job. We humbly request that you continue celebrating Kiernan’s life, preserve his memory and continue his legacy through his music. Your joyous celebration of his life gives us comfort,” the statement read.
The statement also warned fans to not fall for “false requests and investments from people posing as members of the Forbes family.”
“We have not opened any donation accounts or requested any investments,” the family confirmed.
The police have yet to come forward with statements confirming the arrests that took place earlier this week.
