The investigation into the callous murder of AKA took a turn into risky territory when, on Saturday, CCTV footage that captured his alleged killers pulling off the assassination leaked on social media.
Who killed AKA? Two suspects identified in leaked CCTV
Kiernan Forbes, otherwise renowned globally as the highest-selling African rapper, AKA, was with friends in Durban, on the evening of Friday, 10 February 2023, when two armed gunmen ambushed him outside a popular eatery on Florida Road.
CCTV footage of the assassination mysteriously surfaced on social media, showing the harrowing final moments of Supermega’s life.
In the video, the rapper and his entourage were seen leaving the restaurant, visibly in good spirits.
The group shared hugs and handshakes but in a split second, one brazen gunman was caught on camera as he snuck up to the rapper from behind and released a fatal gunshot to the back of his head, killing him instantly.
From a distance, a second shooter was seen firing shots into the group and as the crowd dispersed, another male victim, believed to be Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane dropped to the ground.
Swisher Post has seen the gory CCTV footage but out of respect for the Forbes family and to uphold the integrity of the investigation, we will not share the video.
We also implore those who have the video to refrain from spreading it any further, as this may jeopardise the case.
What are the latest updates in the AKA murder investigation?
Durban police have centralised all resources toward identifying the two gunmen involved in the double murder. At this time, however, no announcements of an arrest have been made.
Speaking at a symposium held by the South African National Editor’s Forum (SANEF) on Saturday, Justice Minister Ronald Lamola called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of AKA’s killers.
“I call for the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators, the biggest deterrent to crime is for criminals to know that there is a big chance for them to be arrested, prosecuted and convicted. I also convey my condolences to his family, may his soul rest in peace,” Lamola said.
AKA’s family also released a statement on Saturday morning, acknowledging the rapper’s death.
“To us, Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, was a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend, most importantly father to his beloved daughter Kairo. To many he was AKA, SUPERMEGA, BHOVA and the many other names of affection his legion of fans called him by.
“Our son was loved and he gave love in return. In this time of grief we appeal for your compassion, space and time to congregate as family to decide on the upcoming days,” the family wrote.
The Prada rapper’s girlfriend, Nadia Nakai, has been off the grid since news of his death first broke on Friday evening, and no statements have come from her camp as yet.
AKA is survived by his seven-year-old daughter Kairo Forbes whom he shared with DJ Zinhle, and his parents Lynn and Tony Forbes
Details about AKA’s funeral and memorial service were not available at the time this article was published.
