Crafted during the pandemic, the screenplay symbolised hope and a return to the communal experience of moviegoing.
It evolved into a playful yet profound narrative, capturing the essence of Barbie with humour and existential musings. Gerwig and Baumbach’s love for the script was evident, even amid doubts about its production.
The film’s originality, highlighted by producer David Heyman and Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, played a crucial role in its success.
Heyman praised the film’s thematic richness and Gerwig’s singular artistic vision, while Zaslav emphasised the collaborative effort behind the project’s triumph.
“There’s a real hunger for originality. Greta Gerwig is a singular artist, she pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in the most collaborative way. The film is fun, thematically rich, and very moving. It was challenging, of course, but when we made it, there was a spirit of fun that permeated the production,” Heyman said.
Gerwig’s screenplay drew from various inspirations, including classic Technicolor musicals and the complexities surrounding the Barbie doll. She aimed to create a narrative that simultaneously celebrated and critiqued aspects of feminism and beauty standards.
Set for release as a paperback book on Tuesday, 26 December 2023, the screenplay includes the full script, vibrant photos from the film, and an introduction by Gerwig and Baumbach.
It’s a chance for fans and cinephiles to explore the creative process behind one of the most successful films of the year.
