There are a lot of milestones attached to Thuto, the third offering by Motswako’s very own Cassper Nyovest.
The album was released on this day, three years ago and packed instant classics like Superman, Confused and his signature club banger Bentley Coupe_.
Remembering Thuto: Everything he achieved with the album
There are many firsts attached to Thuto. It was the first time we had seen a South African rapper collaborate with the beautiful and oh-so-sensual Goapele, our most underappreciated export.
We also applauded Cassper Nyovest for being brave enough to invite Black Thought on a record which, suffice it to say, was nothing more than a lashing for our Mufasa.
Probably more important than everything we have listed above, are the doors that opened for Cassper Nyovest after the release of this album.
By 2017, he had already filled up the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg. However, this was not the ceiling for the rapper. The mammoth and never-before-achieved feat was to fill up the 94 000-capacity FNB Stadium.
Nyovest will always remember this period as one of the hardest and most challenging chapters of his life. Without the backing of a major label, the 29-year-old flexed his muscle, widened his network and with the sacrifice of his blood, sweat and tears, he pulled it off.
This achievement, accompanied by the accolades collected by Thuto, immortalised Nyovest as one of the most successful South African artists in history.
Cassper Nyovest fans celebrate album’s third anniversary
His loyal fanbase stood by him, from the moment Tsholofelo (his debut) dropped in 2014 until this day, where he faces more criticism than any of his peers.
However, this, more than anything, is a testament to the level of expectation he faces on a daily basis.
Fans of SA Hip-Hop have been on social media, celebrating the album’s their anniversary with the rapper.
These are some of the reactions we picked from Twitter:
