In the heart of Shongweni, Durban, the Westown Square development is transforming the landscape with its innovative approach to retail and lifestyle.
Here’s everything we know about Westown Square
This R1.4 billion project, a pivotal element of the larger 100-ha Westown development, is setting new standards for shopping experiences by seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor environments.
At the forefront of this transformation is the 50,000m² high-street retail experience, designed by MDS Architecture in partnership with Boogertman and Partners KZN.
The design celebrates the natural beauty of the Shongweni Green Belt and encourages community interaction through its open, accessible layout.
Westown Square is more than just a shopping destination; it’s a comprehensive community hub where shopping, dining, living, and recreation converge.
Its design emphasises the movement of people, social spaces, and a connection with the outdoors, featuring densely planted walkways, pergola-covered seating, and children’s play areas.
The leasing success speaks volumes, with over 80% of retail space already claimed by leading national and international brands, signalling strong market confidence.
Anchor tenants such as Checkers Hyper, Pick n Pay, Dischem, Edgars, Mr Price, and Clicks are set to bring their latest offerings to the area.
The project is backed by significant investment, including primary funding from Absa Investment Bank and infrastructure development by eThekwini Municipality and Fundamentum.
This investment is expected to catalyse further development across Westown, promising a bright future for the region.
Scheduled to open in March 2025, Westown Square will be a cornerstone of Westown’s Urban Core, supporting a diverse range of precincts and experiences from residential apartments to commercial activities and the West Private Hospital.
