Key highlights of the 96th Academy Awards
The phenomenon of “Barbenheimer,” a collective term for Barbie and Oppenheimer, received 21 nominations, with Oppenheimer leading with thirteen and Barbie securing eight.
These films competed in six categories, including Best Picture.
Several industry veterans marked their presence with nominations that extended their records. Steven Spielberg achieved his thirteenth Best Picture nomination, while Martin Scorsese became the oldest nominee for Best Director, marking his tenth nomination in the category.
Composer John Williams received his 54th nomination, and editor Thelma Schoonmaker received her ninth. The awards also celebrated diversity with nominations for three openly LGBTQ+ actors and Lily Gladstone, who became the first Native American actress to be nominated.
Key winners included Oppenheimer for Best Picture, Christopher Nolan for Best Director, Cillian Murphy for Best Actor in his role as J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Emma Stone for Best Actress in Poor Things. Robert Downey Jr. won Best Supporting Actor, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph took home Best Supporting Actress.
The ABCs of Book Banning and Island In Between were among the nominees in the Documentary Short Film category.
