Renowned rapper Gunna made a triumphant return to the music scene with the release of his latest single, Bread and Butter, marking his first official release since his release from jail in late 2022.
Gunna confronts ‘snitch’ accusers on ‘Bread and Butter’
Accompanied by a visually striking black-and-white music video set in Los Angeles and directed by Left, Gunna takes the opportunity to address the highly publicised legal issues and snitching allegations that have surrounded him, as well as the seven months he spent incarcerated.
In the song, the 29-year-old artist references the controversy, rapping lines such as,
“You b*** ass n***as got me the topic of the chat/You switched on me when you know you in business with a rat/And the boy, that’s like your brother, ain’t nobody speak on that,” and “Never gave no statement or agreed to take no stand on ’em/Whatever you n***as on, then trust me, I’mma stand on it/Lawyers and that DA did some sneaky shit, I fell for it/On my P’s and Q’s because this time I be prepared for it.”
In the chorus, Gunna melodically expresses,
“I’m right back and I lost mad commas/I had been down bad inside a dark tunnel, yeah/F*** them boys, I found out who my real partners/And who was only with me ’cause I had dollars.”
Prior to the release of Bread and Butter, Gunna had been teasing his musical comeback for over a month.
When a fan page shared a snippet of an unreleased track with the query, “Gunna, where TF are you?” Gunna promptly responded in the comments section, stating, “I’m OTW,” which was met with enthusiasm from his fans.
The anticipation for new music heightened when producer BeldonDidThat posted a snippet of another unreleased Gunna track, captioning it “new Gunna” and tagging fellow producer BabyWave.
The lyrics in the snippet make explicit reference to Gunna’s legal battle, with lines such as,
“Homies will take the charge if I gotta cop out/Take a look again, n***a, mine shot out/Forgive me for my sins and they mad I got out.”
Gunna’s legal camp insists he never told
Gunna’s recent legal troubles involved him, Young Thug, and several other associates of the YSL (Young Stoner Life) collective, who were named in a wide-ranging indictment alleging criminal gang activity.
Following his release from jail, Gunna faced mixed reactions, with some congratulating him while others speculated that he had cooperated with prosecutors to secure his freedom.
Gunna’s attorney, Steve Sadow, addressed the snitching allegations on Instagram, vehemently denying them and affirming that Gunna had not provided any information to authorities.
“Gunna did not snitch to get out of jail,” Sadow stated in a December post. “He has said nothing and is not cooperating. His plea statement cannot be used in court against any other defendant. So please stop spreading lies.”
