South African-born actress Thuso Mbedu brought regal energy to the Elle ‘Women In Hollywood’ event that took place in Hollywood on Monday, 17 October 2022.
Here’s what Thuso Mbedu wore at Elle’s ‘Women In Hollywood’ event
The young actress’ career in the United States (US) continues to soar, and at the Elle event, her presence was certainly felt. The lead star of The Woman King graced the ‘Women In Hollywood’ red carpet in a white ‘Regal Tuxedo’ dress designed by womenswear designer Ong-Oaj Piram.
On her feet, Mbedu wore a pair of Stuart Weitzman heels.
For Mbedu, not only was the event another glimpse of her ascension in Hollywood, but it was also an opportunity she relished.
“[I] got to spend the night with an inspirational group of people being reminded of what truly matters in this industry and in this life,” she reflected in an Instagram post.
Mbedu recently made her major studio debut on The Woman King, a polarising film directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. In another show of the results yielded by strong chemistry, Mbedu (Nawi) and Viola Davis (Nanisca) journey into two parallels of womanhood in 17th century West Africa as two members of the Agoji tribe.

While the film depicts the notorious tribe, whose history is marred by their culpability in the slave trade boom of that era, as Davis explained in an interview with Variety, Prince-Bythewood “entered the story where the kingdom was in flux, at a crossroads.”
“They were looking to find some way to keep their civilization and kingdom alive. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that they were decimated. Most of the story is fictionalized. It has to be,” she explained in response to backlash over the film’s release.
Mbedu, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, also defended Prince-Bythewood’s vision of telling a story about a relationship between Nanisca and Nawi, which drew parallels from her personal life.
“[Those conversations] made me completely understand where she was coming from in telling this particular story or this moment in the narrative, but it also made me rather sensitive to how I treated it in the moment. I wanted to do my best in serving where Gina was coming from,” Mbedu said
The Woman King has since grossed more than $76 million (est. R1.39 billion) since its release in September 2022.
