The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) in Gauteng has taken action against seven South African Police Service (SAPS) members from Ekurhuleni allegedly involved in the brazen robbery of a popular café in Nigel, which was caught on CCTV.

IPID national spokesperson Robbie Raburabu confirmed in a statement released on Sunday that the seven police officers were detained on Friday, 28 July 2023.
Among them were four members of the Ekurhuleni Infrastructure Unit and three members of Germiston Crime Intelligence. They were arrested on charges related to aggravated robbery, assault, and malicious damage to property.
According to the allegations, the SAPS members entered the LM café in Nigel and terrorised the staff on Saturday, 15 July 2023.
The officers are accused of assaulting the café’s managers and causing damage to property, including a digital video recorder.
Additionally, the officers are said to have stolen a substantial amount of cash, amounting to R150 000.00.
Furthermore, they allegedly confiscated over 150 boxes of cigarettes but failed to account for all the confiscated items.
Following the IPID’s investigations and the severity of the allegations, the implicated police officers voluntarily surrendered themselves at the Benoni police station.
Subsequently, they were detained at the Nigel police station pending further legal proceedings.

The arrested SAPS members were scheduled to appear at the Nigel Magistrate’s Court on Monday to face the charges brought against them. The court appearance is expected to shed more light on the details of the incident and determine the course of action.
