Durban cash-in-transit heist claims one life: Here’s everything we know
Details about the incident are still unclear as law enforcement officials were still at the scene when this article was published.
However, footage going viral on social media showed the harrowing moment a group of armed and militant suspects intercepted a loaded money truck in full view of gob-smacked eyewitnesses, one of whom died in the crossfire.
According to information available at our disposal, the incident took place at an intersection near Russell and Victoria Street. Video evidence circulating online showed multiple armed men, who disembarked from a white station wagon, ambushing iziCash security guards at approximately 09:40.
One of the guards held his hands up helplessly as three armed robbers waved loaded rifles in his face. The first video ended abruptly as the getaway vehicle pulled into the frame, with the raucous sounds of gunfire echoing across the street.
According to reports, in the midst of the hail of gunfire unleashed by the robbers, one male victim, a renowned shop owner, was viciously shot in the head and was declared dead at the scene by ALS Paramedics.
In a statement quoted on IOL News, ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson revealed that the iziCash van attempted an escape but pressure from the robbers tailing behind forced the armoured truck to veer off-road, ramming into a passenger-carrying taxi before it screeched to a halt on the side of the street where vendors were seated.
“A total of seven vendors and one taxi driver have sustained injuries ranging from moderate to serious and have been stabilised on scene by multiple ambulance services, and have been transported through to nearby hospitals for the further care that they required,” said Jamison,” Jamieson said.
When this article was published, Durban law enforcement authorities had cordoned off a section of the crime scene in and around Russell and Victoria Street to collect evidence and interview eyewitnesses.
The suspects are presumed to be at large in a vehicle that was hijacked at the scene of the cash-in-transit heist.
