Three North West detectives have been taken into custody for alleged corruption involving a R6 000 bribe.
North West detectives charged with corruption
The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit made headlines on Monday, 26 February 2024, with the arrest of three police detectives aged 39, 44, and 48.
The arrests took place at a shopping mall in Hebron, where the detectives were apprehended for soliciting a bribe from an unnamed accuser.
According to Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Tinyiko Mathebula, the trio demanded R6 000 from the plaintiff to avoid arrest. Initially, the complainant managed to pay R2 000, but the detectives later contacted him for the outstanding R4 000.
This demand led to the involvement of the Hawks, who, after being notified of the situation, orchestrated an entrapment operation. The operation successfully culminated in the arrest of the detectives as they received the remaining R4 000 from the complainant.
The identities of the detectives were not made public when this article was published. The disgraced officers will be formally unveiled when they make their first appearance at the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 27 February 2024.
