The gavel is set to drop on the extravagant assets of Hildegard Steenkamp, the convicted embezzler whose lavish lifestyle was funded by over R537 million illicitly siphoned from her employer.
What Hildegard Steenkamp assets will be on auction?
The Johannesburg Commercial Crimes Court has greenlit the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) to auction off Steenkamp’s ill-gotten gains, including:
- an opulent collection of 105 bottles of Johnnie Walker Blue Label;
- six sumptuous residences; and
- an array of jewellery from luxury brands like;
- Chopard Mille Miglia;
- Louis Vuitton;
- Versace; and
- Breitling Breit.
These assets, initially restrained in 2018, are now authorised for auction, the latest chapter in the downfall of Steenkamp’s high-flying days.
Steenkamp’s journey from a high-rolling lifestyle to a convict began with her admission of guilt to 336 charges related to the theft of a monumental R537 million from Medtronic (Pty) Ltd, where she was employed as an accountant.
This colossal fraud, spanning over a decade, finally culminated in her conviction, in December 2023.
How to participate in the auction
Prospective bidders eager to own a piece of this notorious saga should mark their calendars. The auction promises a rare glimpse into the extravagant world Steenkamp once inhabited, now available to the highest bidder.
Details on how to participate in this auction, including registration processes and bidding guidelines, are expected to be announced by the AFU.
This event not only represents a chance to acquire high-value items but also highlights the consequences of white-collar crime.
