As per BBC, the suspect started shooting at around 17:00, along the Neuse River Greenway in a neighbourhood northeast of the city centre. This led to police officers from various agencies swarming the area, closing roads and admonishing locals to stay indoors while they looked for the shooter.
Two people were taken to hospitals, including one police officer. Fortunately, the officer was released, but the other survivor’s condition remained critical.
Police only described the suspect as a young, white male. Consequently, authorities took the suspect into custody around 21:30 with life-threatening injuries. His identity and age have not been released. It is not known if his wounds were self-inflicted. Furthermore, police have not defined his motive for the mass shooting as the investigation was ongoing.
The Raleigh Police Department issued a Twitter warning to nearby residents to “remain in their homes” as the fatal incident developed.
The shooting in Raleigh was the most recent in a week of violence across the United States.
Five people were killed in a shooting at a house in South Carolina on Sunday, 9 October 2022. Two police officers were fatally shot on Wednesday, 12 October 2022, after they were allegedly lured into an ambush by a 911 call reporting possible domestic violence in Connecticut.
Moreover, in Greenville, Mississippi, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, and central Florida, police officers have been shot this week. One of those officers was killed in Greenville, and the other was killed in Las Vegas.
