The mall, a popular local shopping destination for residents in Cape Town’s northern suburbs, became a crime scene on Wednesday when multiple gunshots rang out, leaving shoppers and workers shaken.
The incident unfolded near the Checkers entrance of the mall. A man, reportedly a foreigner working at one of the cellphone shops, was shot in the lower abdomen during what appeared to be an armed robbery.
Witnesses say the victim was heading to a financial institution to deposit cash when three armed men emerged from a vehicle and fired at him.
Goodwood police were called to the scene around 10:30. On arrival, they found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds. Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi confirmed the victim was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
By then, the perpetrators had fled the scene before the police’s arrival and, when this article was published, they were still at large.
As the police delve into the investigation, the motive behind the attack remains a key focus.
Swartbooi has indicated that the police are actively pursuing leads to apprehend the suspects and unravel the circumstances leading up to this violent act.
