Mall of Africa armed robbery: Here’s what we know
The affluent shopping district situated in the quaint Midrand suburb was the scene of chaos on Monday evening when a group of armed suspects ambushed a jewellery store.
In a statement, Mall of Africa General Manager Johann Fourie confirmed the incident, indicating that the “armed attack took place at the Mall’s parking exit after operating hours.”
The prompt response of law enforcement foiled the robbers’ plans, as they were met with a hail of gunfire as they made their way out of the mall’s parking lot exit.
Consequently, one suspect was shot and killed, while another sustained life-threatening injuries.
“Casualties were reported as a result of gunshot wounds,” Fourie confirmed.
At this juncture, without a formal statement from police, it’s unclear if any suspects, apart from the wounded perp, were either arrested or escaped.
“A case has been opened and The Mall of Africa is working closely with the South African Police Services (SAPS) and its local security partners to investigate the incident,” the mall added.
Fourie confirmed that Mall of Africa “continues to be open as per normal operating times and is safe for tenants and shoppers.”
This is a developing story.
