Off-duty JMPD Officer Levonne Jonas was shot after courageously stepping in to assist a woman being assaulted in Midrand, now recovering in hospital.
Levonne Jonas lauded for saving Midrand woman from abuser
So, here’s what went down in Midrand recently. JMPD Officer Levonne Jonas, who’s part of the By-Laws Management Unit, was off-duty when he witnessed a guy assaulting his girlfriend.
Jonas didn’t just stand by; he stepped in to help, which is pretty brave, all things considered. But, unfortunately, things took a nasty turn.
This all happened at the N1 South Olifantsfontein Road onramp, according to a statement by spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla.
Officer Jonas, seeing the assault, jumped into action, identifying himself as a cop to try and de-escalate the situation.
Unfortunately, it escalated instead. The attacker managed to disarm Jonas and used his firearm against him. The officer ended up with gunshot wounds to his arm and leg and a graze on his head.
Thankfully, he’s now in a stable condition at the hospital.
JMPD was quick to respond, and so were the Midrand SAPS. The woman involved came back to the scene and gave the full story.
The plot twist? The attacker was later found chilling at Tembisa SAPS. The cops didn’t waste any time – they arrested him, and he’s now facing some serious charges back at Midrand SAPS, including assault GBH and attempted murder.
Right now, Officer Jonas is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect, whose identity remains unknown at this stage, is due in court soon.
