A high-speed chase in Hillbrow resulted in the arrest of five male suspects by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) K9 Unit.
Hillbrow suspects’ crime spree ends in epic car chase
On the evening of Tuesday, 24 October 2023, JMPD officers were conducting crime prevention patrols in Bruma. During their patrol, they noticed a suspicious silver Volkswagen Polo driving at high speeds.
Ignoring the activated sirens and blue lights from the police vehicle, the Polo’s driver refused to stop. The chase escalated in Cyrildene, where the suspects fired gunshots at the pursuing officers. The police returned fire, maintaining the high-speed chase.
The chase ended dramatically at the corner of Wolmarans and Nugget Street in Hillbrow. The Polo lost control and crashed into a wall. A total of five suspects were arrested, two of whom sustained injuries during the shootout.
Upon arrest, it was revealed that the suspects were allegedly fleeing from a house robbery in Primrose, Germiston. Recovered from the vehicle were suspected stolen items, including a television set, laptops, and jewellery. Additionally, five live ammunition rounds and a replica firearm were found.
The Polo displayed a false registration plate, with the original plates found inside. Further investigation showed the car had been leased from a rental company.
Three of the suspects were detained at Hillbrow SAPS, while the injured were taken to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital under police guard. The vehicle used in the alleged crimes was seized and booked at SAPS Aeroton.
The suspects are due to appear in court soon.
This is a developing story.
