The heinous crime transpired on the morning of Wednesday, 11 October 2023, at the Cash Build Hardware situated in Orange Farm, opposite Eyethu Mall.
A cash-in-transit vehicle was the target of this audacious heist, conducted by armed robbers who successfully absconded with an undisclosed sum of money.
The operation was underway when two G4S security personnel were on duty, collecting funds from the business location.
The ordeal took a horrific turn as one of the security guards entered the premises for cash collection and was abruptly accosted by an armed perpetrator inside the building.
According to the SAPS spokesperson, Brig Athlenda Mathe, a struggle between the guard and the assailant ensued. Tragically, the confrontation led to the guard being shot three times – in the leg, left arm, and head, which resulted in fatal injuries.
The robbery escalated outside the establishment where another suspect, armed with an AK-47 rifle, kept a vigilant lookout.
This suspect unleashed a barrage of bullets towards the driver’s side of the parked CIT vehicle outside the business premises. Miraculously, the driver escaped unscathed, managing to manoeuvre the vehicle to safety, eventually reaching the Grasmere toll gate.
The aftermath at the crime scene revealed a chilling testimony to the ferocity of the attack, with eight AK-47 cartridges and three 9mm cartridges found scattered.
The authorities have swiftly acted, opening cases of murder, robbery, and attempted murder to pave the way for an exhaustive investigation.
As part of the investigative measures, CCTV footage from the vicinity is being meticulously reviewed, which is anticipated to significantly aid in identifying and locating the culprits.
The exact amount of money looted by the suspects remains undisclosed by the authorities.
