Deon Nel disappearance: Two suspects in court for alleged theft
In a statement, police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone confirmed, however, that the two suspects will face charges of illegal possession of suspected stolen goods, rather than directly related to the alleged abduction.
The arrest took place on Friday, 7 July 2023 at a residence in Randlespark, Klerksdorp, following a series of tip-offs that led investigators, consisting of various law enforcement units and private security officials, to the property.
The focus of the investigation was the disappearance of Deon Nel, a 30-year-old individual who reportedly went missing in Wolmaransstad on Thursday, 6 July 2023.
Nel was last seen after visiting a local pub and did not return home. Initially treated as a missing person case, it was subsequently reclassified as a kidnapping after a ransom demand emerged.
During the search of the house, items belonging to Deon Nel were discovered, including a watch, clothing, a hat, bank and identity cards, as well as a cellphone.
Additionally, investigators found blood stains within the residence. As a result, the two suspects were taken into custody for illegal possession of suspected stolen goods. A third individual has also been brought in for questioning in connection with the case.
The investigation is ongoing, with efforts underway to locate Deon Nel and his Mazda Drifter vehicle.
