Cape Town police are actively pursuing leads about a case involving a woman and a child found dead in a house in Bergvliet.
Bergvliet woman and child found dead: Here’s what we know
At this time, the case is being treated as an inquest with very little evidence available to escalate matters further.
In a statement, Cape Town spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg revealed the matter was registered with Kirstenhof detectives after paramedics called to a property situated on the busy Bergvliet Main Road at approximately 11:00.
It’s still unclear under what circumstances the emergency call was made, or, better yet, who alerted rescuers, but first responders were met with a grisly scene when they entered the home.
“Kirstenhof police registered two inquest cases for investigation after an adult female and a ten-year-old boy were discovered in their home in Main Road, Bergvliet on Sunday morning at about 11:00,” Sgt Twigg confirmed.
By then, there was little medics could do and both victims “were declared deceased on the scene.”
With very little revealed by authorities, speculation is rife about the circumstances of the woman and child’s deaths.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation,’ the sergant added.
As it stands, the matter has not formally been registered as a double murder case.
This early into the investigation, Kirstenhof detectives would be collecting information on the woman’s background and her activity in the hours leading up to her death.
It’s believed a toxicology examination may also be conducted to rule out self-harm.
This is a developing story.
