Gordon’s Bay Main Beach drowning: Here’s everything we know
The Gordon’s Bay police have since launched an inquest into the circumstances surrounding the drowning, seeking to clarify the sequence of events that led to the unfortunate outcome.
In a statement, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Gordon’s Bay revealed that an on-duty crew sprung into action upon receiving eyewitness reports of a drowning in progress adjacent to the Main Beach, near the Gordon’s Bay Naval Base.
Reacting immediately, a crew was mobilised to the rescue base.
CoCT lifeguards, stationed at Gordon’s Bay Main Beach, were among the first to reach the victim after he was brought ashore by a group of quick-thinking swimmers.
These swimmers had noticed the man’s lack of movement in the water and had courageously intervened. Lifeguards immediately commenced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and signalled for further assistance.
Despite the extensive efforts by paramedics to revive the young man, a 25-year-old resident of Athlone, he was ultimately declared deceased.
The family of the deceased, who were present nearby at the time of the incident, were taken into the care of the police, while the body was transferred to the Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
The NSRI, in their statement, extended condolences to the bereaved family and friends, reflecting on the collective sorrow felt by the community.
“It cannot be confirmed at this early stage if the cause was from drowning and all thoughts are with the family,” the statement read.
As the police inquest progresses, the focus remains on understanding the full circumstances of the drowning and, in essence, to rule out foul play.
