Senzo Meyiwa murder trial: What are the latest updates?
On Thursday, 16 May 2024, Fisokuhle Ntuli, accused number 5, admitted to using the cellphone number that investigators linked to calls made to Kelly Khumalo, the late soccer star Senzo Meyiwa’s girlfriend.
This number had previously been identified by Colonel Lambertus Steyn, a cellphone data analyst who testified earlier in the trial.
Steyn had stated that Ntuli used this number to call Khumalo twice, in August and October 2014.
On Friday, 17 May 2024, another cellphone data analyst, Gideon Gouws, testified regarding the new statements he had deposed.
Gouws confirmed that his signature was on the statement dated April 2024.
He read his affidavit in court, explaining that he was instructed to check for communication between the accused individuals.
The court proceedings included a discussion on whether Gouws should read the entire document or only the parts relevant to the case.
The matter was postponed to Monday, with the defence and state needing to decide whether Gouws should continue reading the whole document or focus specifically on the telephone numbers pertinent to the case.
The trial resumes on Monday.
Who killed Senzo Meyiwa?
The five suspects, Carlos Mthobisi Mncube, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and Fisokuhle Ntuli, facing murder, attempted murder, robbery and gun charges, were nabbed in October 2021, on the seventh anniversary of the Orlando Pirates goalkeeper’s death.
One of the murder accused, Sibiya, was recently sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for attempted murder. He was found guilty of shooting his girlfriend, who, at the time, had threatened to lift the lid on his alleged involvement in the death of Meyiwa.
Kelly Khumalo has also been linked to the death of Meyiwa, who, at the time, was romantically involved with the revered songstress.
Despite numerous rumours of her alleged masterminding of the murder, her attorney Magdalene Moonsamy has maintained that her client remains “very positive” and “in good spirits”.
“She has been looking forward to this, and it’s nowhere, and we anticipate closure. There is a family involved, there is a child involved that has lost her dad and this is important for the purposes of herself and for the purposes of moving forward,” Moonsamy said at the time.
