Late Saturday night at San Antonio’s Market Square, what began as festive Fiesta celebrations ended in tragedy.
Two men engaged in a shootout, both of whom were fatally injured, one by the other and one by police, as the violent encounter unfolded before officers and bystanders.
What happened during the Market Square shooting?
Just after midnight, amid the vibrant Fiesta backdrop, gunfire erupted in Margarita Alley within Market Square.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus detailed that two men, an 18-year-old and a 20-year-old, exchanged gunfire in a crowded area.
Police officers nearby, initially patrolling near Conch Alley, responded quickly upon hearing the shots.
The officers witnessed the 18-year-old fleeing the scene and gave chase. During the pursuit, the young man reportedly turned and fired his handgun at the 20-year-old, hitting him.
In response, the officers shot the 18-year-old, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The 20-year-old victim was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
Is there any information on the motive?
Tragically, the shootout affected bystanders as well. Chief McManus reported that four innocent people were caught in the crossfire.
Two of these bystanders were transported to the hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening, while the other two received treatment on the spot.
At the crime scene, authorities recovered two weapons: one next to the deceased 18-year-old and another in a nearby flower bed where the second shooter was hit.
These findings suggest that both young men were armed and actively engaged in the confrontation.
As of now, the motives behind the shooting remain unclear. Police have not released any details regarding what might have prompted the deadly exchange.
The names of the individuals involved have not been disclosed either, pending further investigation and notification of their families.
Despite the violent incident, the Fiesta celebrations continued. The following day, residents and visitors still gathered at Fiesta de los Reyes, expressing a determined resilience not to let the violence disrupt the festive spirit.
