The disturbing viral video, which has garnered thousands of views since it first surfaced on TikTok this past weekend, was condemned by the City of Johannesburg Speaker Colleen Makhubele, who emphasised the need to refrain from mocking serious breaches of public law and social ethics that such actions represent.
She noted that such behaviours deter others from viewing South Africa as a respectable society.
Expressing her concern, Makhubele asserted:
“Our society has lost all forms of social control and social order, and makes it very uncomfortable for residents, tourists, and investors to take our nation and cities seriously.”
Makhubele further pointed to the video as a stark example of why the civic education program has been initiated, aiming to instil a sense of social respect and promote decent coexistence within shared spaces.
