The university’s homecoming week was marred by a shooting incident on Tuesday evening, injuring five individuals and propelling the institution into an extensive lockdown.
This occurrence not only brought an abrupt halt to the celebratory mood on campus but also reignited the nationwide discourse on gun violence within academic precincts.
According to reports, the ordeal began shortly after the crowning event of Mister and Miss Morgan State at the Murphy Fine Arts Centre. As attendees dispersed towards a campus ball around 21:25 ET, gunshots resonated through the vicinity, prompting an immediate police response.
The initial chaos saw shattered dormitory windows, which alongside the gunfire, propelled authorities to treat the scenario as an active shooter situation, thereby enforcing a shelter-in-place order.
In this video, a squadron of Baltimore’s SWAT unit was caught on camera raiding a freshman’s dorm room, a harrowing moment that left its occupants traumatised.

The ensuing hours were laden with anxiety as law enforcement personnel meticulously combed through dorm rooms in search of suspects. Police Commissioner Richard Worley disclosed that the victims—four males and one female aged between 18 and 22—sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Morgan State Police Chief Lance Hatcher further revealed that four out of the five victims were university students.
Despite the extensive search, no arrests were made and the police refrained from releasing any information regarding the suspect or suspects involved.
The lockdown was lifted around 00:30 ET., following a SWAT team’s clearance of a building, initially suspected to harbour a shooter.
In the wake of the incident, University President David Wilson cancelled Wednesday’s classes and convened an emergency meeting to deliberate on the fate of upcoming events leading to the homecoming game scheduled for Saturday.
Gun violence takes centre stage yet again in the United States
This unsettling episode at Morgan State University is a grim reminder of the burgeoning issue of gun violence on campuses across the United States.
The incident joins a growing list of shooting episodes that continue to disrupt the academic environment and pose substantial security challenges to institutions of higher learning.
As the community rallies to support the victims and restore normalcy, the broader conversation on enhancing security measures and gun control within academic settings gains renewed momentum.
